Welcome!

My name is Charles LeRoss and I was raised in Terrace. The Skeena River was always a part of my life growing up, whether it was swimming in the back waters of the river down at Little’s Island, skating on the west channel between Terrace and Ferry Island (gawd, were those howling winds from up river cold) or every spring, anticipating how high the river would come up. And sadly, the events each year about vehicles that went into the river, with people that were never found.

My goal in creating this website was to bring out in the open a lot of wonderful stories I have come across about the Skeena River, and the people and places along the river. I have found these stories in the books I have read, and other papers and documents. There are hundreds, if not thousands of photographs of the river which are carefully stored in archives and private collections. I hope to get some of those photos and stories out of storage and on to the website.

If you come across a photo on my website that is not credited or not credited correctly, please let me know and I will correct and give proper credit.

There may not be a book in your family story, but I will bet there are some great stories. If you have a story you would like to add to the website and it is related to life on the Skeena River, please write it up and attach any photos, media or documents related to the story and I will carefully consider posting it to the website. Email the story to:

If you have photos of the river, places or people that you would like posted, contact me at the above address and we will discuss posting your content. Location info about the pics is important so please include. I expect you will provide captions for the photos also. Every photo will not be posted. I will tell you a story about photos. My brother went on a cruise and came back with 200 photos of the trip which he sent me on a CD (a Compact Disk, a plastic device which you could snail mail and which could contain hundreds of pictures). I glanced at the CD and realized I was not going to look at his 200 photos of his cruise. I called him and told him I was not going to look at all the photos. He was quite miffed. I asked him to pick out 25 of the best pictures, and out of the 25 pick his favorite, which he did. I looked at the 25 and his favorite picture is still part of my desktop pics.

If you have some better quality images of the Skeena River and area, and provide a GPS location, I will consider posting the images to the Interactive Map of the Skeena.

When I say Skeena River in this article it includes its tributaries, except for the Bulkley River which is included only up to Hagwilget and the Babine River only as far as Kisgegas.
